We Love Mrs. Schwartz!

Mrs. Schwartz read to the cubs on Pajama Day.  She is retiring after being the librarian at Copper Creek for 11 years.  We will miss her. She always helped the cubs find the books they wanted and recognized them with her magic wand every time they got 100% on an A.R. test.

Bear Country's Checker Board Reindeer

Every child made a reindeer on Reindeer Day.  They also read a non-fiction book about reindeer, made a reindeer candle and listened to the book, The Wild Christmas Reindeer.

Two New Honors Readers from Bear Country

These two cubs earned enough points in the school's A.R. club to become Honors Readers.  We are very proud of them!

We've Started Preparing for the Play

The cubs were too busy to write for the blog this week.  We are putting on the play, How the Grinch Stole Christmas.  The parts are chosen, the practice has begun, and each child wrote a retelling of the book.  Here are some pictures that the children made of themselves as Whos.  I hope you enjoy them as much as we have.

Our class is participating in the Healthy Hawk Milers.  Here's what Mason wrote: "I did the Healthy Milers.  I did 4 or 5 laps.  You walk around a track."  One lap is 1/4 of a mile.  The class goal is to have everyone walk at least one mile.  Mrs. Pruzin is walking on Tuesdays with the children.

The students have a Poetry Folder.  They get a new poem every Friday.  Here's what Charlie wrote:  " We read a poem about Pilgrim children in our Poetry Folder."

This is what Diego wrote about Art class: "We made penguins.  We stuck sticky paper on a sponge and took it off and put it on paper and it stuck.  We made rainbows."

This is what Desirae wrote about a Thanksgiving quilt we made:  "First we think about what we are thankful for and then we wrote it. Next we traced it with a sharpie and then we colored the whole thing."  Mrs. Pruzin glued each square to make a quilt.

David wrote:  In our Scholastic Newspaper we talked in the classroom about veterans.  Nubs is a dog that doesn't have ears."  Mrs. Pruzin read the children about a dog (Nubs) that was in Iraq.

Spencer wrote:  "I did related facts in Math.  Ryan wrote: "We fed the word muncher."

Christian wrote: "At recess they played tag.  I played basketall with Ed.  I played tag."

Jonas wrote:  In A.R. you read a book and take a test.  You type in the title and take the test."
CONGRATULATIONS TO SHREYA!  She became an Honors Reader on Friday.

We are conducting an experiment with the left over pumpkins.  Adam wrote: "First we put a mushy pumpkin in a pot.  The pumpkin grew a plant."  We put soil on the bottom of the containers before we put in the rotting pumpkins and seeds.  There is mold growing along with the new seedlings.

The children wrote with goose quills and ink.  They made ABC hornbooks. Ed wrote: "We were learning about the Pilgrims and we wrote with quills.  We had to write our name.  We also had to write the alphabet.  Writing with quills was fun."  Here's a picture of a group of them making the hornbook:

Tom Turkey Goes Home with a Cub

The Cubs are taking Tom Turkey home in his special bag.  There's a book to read and his journal.  Each time he goes home the child who takes him writes a fiction story about him.  The cubs have enjoyed listening to his adventures and look forward to the rest of  the stories.  These are the cubs who took him home last week.

A Very Busy Week in Bear Country

(Click on the picture to make it bigger.)

We went to Buckelew Farm on Wednesday.  Here's what the cubs wrote about the trip:
"I rode the bus to the pumpkin patch.  My field trip was fun. Buckelew Farm was my first field trip. It was fun riding on the bus with my friends. I liked reading on the bus. I ate my snack.  We rode a wagon to the patch.  I saw a snake.  There were a lot of pumpkins. The scarecrows were scary.  I had big fun!  It was a nice and warm day.  There were orange, green, yellow, striped, red, big, small and cracked pumpkins.  I rode a wagon to the pumpkin patch.  The wagon ride was fun. I went to the bathroom there and I did not like it because it was smelly!   I picked a medium sized pumpkin.  I liked picking my pumpkin.  I picked a wierd pumpkin.  I didn't like that our first trip was cancelled.  I picked the best pumpkin! After we got our pumpkins we had lunch.  My mom played with us.  I liked when my mom came with us.  I loved it. It was a fun day.  It was a good day.  I had a great time at the farm. My trip was amazing. I wish I could go there again. Thank you Mrs. Pruzin."
We had 5 centers for our Harvest Party on Friday afternoon.  This is a picture of the cubs and Mrs. Pruzin at the end of the day.  As you can see everyone had fun playing candy corn bingo, doing bat bowling, making clay beads for Ben'sBells, making a pumpkin magnet and trying to eat a donut hanging from a string!

Here are some other things that we did this week as written by some cubs: "We got a pumpkin mat and we did everything with our pumpkins. At school we measured our pumpkins. We got a 5 in Art.  I played tag with Ed and I went on the swings. We made a pumpkin out of clay in Art. "

We have been learning about autumn, pumpkins and plants.  We also made pumpkin glyphs.  Below are some pictures that show our learning during the month of October.

Authors , A.R. Dancers & Busy Times

The cubs were so busy this week!  There wasn't time for them to write.  Our school had a Peace Conference.  We did an activity each day.  On Friday the whole school had a Unity Rally.  There was music, a speaker, a slideshow and the grand finale was outside.  A helicopter came to take a picture of the symbol we all formed.  Doves were set free and we watched them fly together for several minutes.

Our trip to Buckelew Farm was rained out.  The cubs were so dissappointed.  We'll be going on Wednesday.  Hopefully it won't rain.

Our pumpkin seeds grew into seedlings and that was very exciting!  The cubs wrote and drew about them in their plant logs.

Many children took A.R. tests this week.  Children who get 100% on their A.R. tests do the A.R. dance at the end of the day.  Here are two pictures of the cubs dancing.

"I got 100% on my A.R. test....YEAH!"

Some children wrote books at home.  The cubs always enjoy the books.
